Pumpkin Party!

Some carved, some painted, and all had a good time at the Youth RE Pumpkin Party after the worship service on Sunday, October 23!

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, October 30 to worship together with our minister Drew Frantz, who will present “Día de los Muertos.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“Día de los Muertos is a Mexican holiday honoring the spirits of the dead; other cultures and religions remember the dead at this time of year as well. In our all-ages worship service we take time to connect with those who have passed and to consider the cycle of life and death.”

Minister’s Column

I have been reading the Hebrew scripture Ecclesiastes, recommended to me by a Jewish friend as containing beautiful and meaningful poetry. There are two passages that strike me today as relevant to this season of autumn and the upcoming holidays of Samhain, Día de los Muertos, and All Soul’s Day. Here is the first…

COVID Update

  • We continue with hybrid services (in-person/Zoom). Our current policy is that everyone entering the building must be vaccinated (unless exempt), which applies to children also. Masks are optional for worship services and small group meetings.

  • Singing by the congregation and the choir is allowed with masks on.

  • Anyone vaccinated may attend services.

  • Small groups can meet in person if they wish, or continue meeting on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our teams and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you're not sure.

  • Indoor eating events are allowed – coffee hour, Friday night potlucks, and our annual Harvest Feast – as long as people are vaccinated.
Please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for updates.

Bring your own favorite beverage too! The workshop will take place in the fellowship hall and is presented by the Adult RE Committee. For more information, or if you need a ride or childcare at the fellowship hall, contact Jodi Fisher at jbfisher121@gmail.com.

Welcome to UU Orientation - October 30

This orientation is geared to newcomers, visitors, and those seeking to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and this UU fellowship. It is offered every month both in person in the fellowship hall and via Zoom, typically on the last Sunday at 12:30pm. Sessions run approximately an hour and a half.

For more info or to register for Welcome to UU, contact: Laura McBride: 989.772.5512 or Lmcbride010@gmail.com Please let Laura know whether you will be attending via Zoom or in-person by the Friday prior to the orientation.

CUUPs Samhain Ritual - October 30

Samhain (pronounced SAH-win) is a holiday known by another name - Halloween. The ancients believed this was the time of year when the veil between the living and those passed was the thinnest. It is a time to remember those who have passed before us and listen to their stories that still live on inside us. It is also the Pagan “new year” with death and birth being two sides of the same coin. We will hold the ritual promptly at 6pm, in hybrid format (in-person/Zoom) and there will be no potluck.

First Friday Potluck - November 4

Please join us in the UUFCM Fellowship Hall at 6:30pm (doors open at 6:15) for food, conversation, and games! Coffee, hot tea, and water will be provided. If you are able, please bring a dish to pass.

How to Help with the Election on November 8

While you may have already voted, many people haven’t. Please share this information with your family members, friends, and neighbors. Regardless of what you choose to do, you don’t want to wake up on the day after the November 8 election wishing you had done more to help.

Learn About the Old Settlers of Michigan

The Old Settlers of Mecosta, Montcalm, and Isabella Counties in Michigan started settling in the area in the early 1860s and by 1873, African-Americans owned 1,392 acres in the three counties. In the 1860's most of the land in Remus was owned by the Old Settlers. Come learn about the Old Settlers by attending the following two events sponsored by the Anti-Racism Task Force.

Friday, November 11 at 7pm

Jay Martin, the director of CMU’s Museum of Cultural and Natural History, will give a presentation on the Old Settlers of Michigan in the Museum, Rowe Hall 124. There is free parking available in Lot 14 behind the museum. It will also be available on Zoom.

Saturday, November 12 at 2:30pm:

Diana Green will lead a walking tour of the Morgan West Wheatland Cemetery in Remus. We will meet at the church at 1:45 to carpool, depart at 2:00, walk the guided tour at 2:30, returning by 4:00 to the Fellowship Hall for hot chocolate and reflection. Please sign up by November 6 with Norma Bailey (baile1nj@cmich.edu) for the walking tour as the guide would like to know how many tour booklets to put together.

Dinners for ICRH - November 13 & 19

It’s that time of the year again. The UUFCM is scheduled to provide dinners at St. John’s Church for the guests of the ICRH Homeless Shelter on Sunday, November 13 and Saturday, November 19. We provide the main meal: salad, main entrée, side dishes, bread, and dessert. If you are interested in helping, let Joyce Henricks know.

Need for Boots!

As we all begin to prepare for the colder/winter season, be aware that the need for boots is great with our homeless/indigent population in Isabella County. If you are planning to replace your old boots with new ones, be sure to donate those used boots to our “Share Your Soles” collection which will be delivered to Clothing, INC for distribution. You can deliver them to our box in the Fellowship Hall.

Coffee Hour Is Back!

We are so happy that we have returned to our traditional coffee hour in the fellowship hall after the service. We have missed being together, sharing our ideas and concerns with one another, and welcoming visitors. All this while enjoying good coffee and yummy treats!

But we need volunteers to make this happen! Please sign up on this form to bring treats (home baked or store bought). You can bring cookies, crackers, pretzels, fruit (washed), popcorn, etc. No nuts, please, as some of our friends are allergic to them. Zoomers can drop off their treats before Sunday at the church or at Gisela’s house (989-513-7827).
