eNews for Thursday, June 8

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, June 11 to worship together with our minister Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “Delight.” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“We are taught that delight is irresponsible or frivolous, but in fact delight is necessary if we are to live in hope. As the season of summer vacation begins, let us remember the usefulness of delight and consider how we can invite more delight into our lives. We will also take time in this service to honor students who have graduated.”

Minister’s Column

“Recently we had a celebration in the fellowship hall in honor of the successful stewardship drive campaign. The campaign asks people once per year to pledge an amount of money they plan to donate next year to keep the Fellowship going financially. This year the pledges were generous and 98% of the goal was met…”

UUFCM Garage Sale - June 15-17

Now’s the time to help! We need everyone to do their part, especially on the three days of the sale! Please read the announcement and then sign up! If you would rather not use the online sign-up form, no problem – call Norma!

Please deliver items to Norma’s house at 222 E. Andre Ave. no later than Tuesday, June 13. Be sure the items are clean and serviceable, and if it is a large item price-wise, please indicate what price you think it should be marked. You can drop items off anytime at Norma’s house – leave them on the back porch, or on the covered front porch if it is raining. If you can’t bring the items to her house, or you have an item too large to bring over yourself, please contact Norma to arrange pick-up (989.560.3952; baile1nj@cmich.edu).

We need volunteers to sort, organize and price Monday-Wednesday, June 12-14 at any time during the day or evening. We need volunteers to staff the sale Thursday-Saturday, June 15-17, in two-hour shifts starting at 8am, with extra volunteers at 7am the first day and noon on Saturday. Please sign up for as often as you would like and can give. Let’s make this a truly all-UUFCM members and friends effort!

UUFCM is Hiring!

UUFCM is looking to hire a new Director of Religious Education and a new Administrative Assistant. If you know anyone interested and qualified, please encourage them to apply, as the best employees sometimes are recruited by word of mouth. UUFCM policy states that we usually do not hire members of the congregation to be employees. Applications and inquiries should go to Rev. Drew. The two job postings are here and on our website:
  • Job posting for Director of Religious Education
(6-10 hours per week starting August 15)
  • Job posting for Administrative Assistant
(7 hours per week starting July 1).

Drawing Workshop - June 13

On 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, from 10-12 noon, Nancy Roeder conducts a drawing workshop for all interested members. Bring in any artwork that you are doing with a drawing medium and she will offer help and answer questions about the piece you are working on. It can be almost any drawing medium, but please do not bring any type of paint. She has some books and photographs on hand to use to pick projects and/or subjects. Nancy has a degree in fine arts from Washington University in St Louis. Please feel free to contact her with questions. Sponsored by the Adult RE Committee.

CUUPs Litha Ritual - June 18

Covenant of UU Pagans

Solstice, or Litha means a stopping or standing still of the sun. It is the longest day of the year and the time when the sun is at its maximum elevation. This is also a time to celebrate growth and life for those who see balance in the world and are deeply aware of the ongoing shifting of the seasons. It is also time to acknowledge that the sun will now begin to decline once more towards winter.

We invite those of you who are interested to participate. We hold the ritual promptly at 6pm, in hybrid format (in-person/Zoom). There will be no potluck.

Directory Update!

Every summer we update our Directory with a printed Addendum, which includes new people, changes in names, postal addresses, emails, and phone numbers. Please help us to make our Directory current by checking your printed Directory of February 2023 and/or the online one and let us know if your entries have changed. The Directory is password protected. If you can't remember the password, please contact Gisela Moffit. Deadline for submission is Sunday, June 18. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Scam Alert

Several congregants have received emails and texts purportedly from UUFCM leadership this past week. If you receive a message that seems suspicious, please remember that we would never solicit money or ask for help in this way, and do not respond to the message.

Here are some things to notice in any message:

  • Does this sound like a message from the sender?
  • Is this the sort of request they would make of you?
  • Does the email shown after the person’s name match the one you know?
Spoofing is an attempt to gather data or collect money by impersonation. It can occur via text, phone, email, or online. If you suspect you are being spoofed, call your friend directly to let them know what happened. If it appears to be from someone within the Fellowship, please also forward the suspicious email to admin@uufcm.org, along with when and how you received the message.

In other instances of spoofing, watch for:

  • requests for personal or financial information
  • requests for money to be transferred
  • a request to return a call, text, or email
  • attachments, particularly .exe files
  • links – do not click them

Stay sharp, be safe, and have a great week!

COVID Policy and Information

  • We continue with hybrid services (in-person/Zoom). Our current policy is that everyone entering the building must be vaccinated (unless exempt), which applies to children also. Masks are optional for worship services and small group meetings.

  • Singing by the congregation and the choir is allowed with masks optional.

  • Small groups can meet in person if they wish, meet on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our teams and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you’re not sure.

  • Indoor eating events are allowed – coffee hour, Friday night potlucks, and our annual Harvest Feast, etc.

Please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for update

The current list of UUFCM COVID policies may be found on our website.
