eNews for Thursday, May 11

What a Potluck!

We had a wonderful potluck last Friday! Thirty-four people gathered, newbies and oldies, and we needed to set up an extra table! Delicious food and great conversation! Join us for the next one on June 2.

Worship Matters

We will gather online via Zoom and in person this Sunday, May 14 to worship together with our minister Rev. Drew Frantz, who will present “Creativity in Families and Relationships” The Zoom call starts at 10:00 for social time, and the service starts at 10:30.

“On this Mother’s Day, we are invited to reflect on the totality of our families and relationships. The choices we make in engaging with each other in these settings is our chance to create the life that we want: relationships of care and authenticity. To build and sustain these relationships requires creativity, courage, and dedication.”

Minister’s Column

“I serve on the Sex Education Advisory Board for the Mount Pleasant School District as a clergy representative. At our meeting this week, both a vote taken and the discussion surrounding it were disturbing to me. They represent the presence of extreme far-right thinking here in this community…”

Scrap Metal Drive - Ends Tomorrow!

Easily transported scrap metal may be deposited into the trailer at 306 West Grand Avenue. If you have larger items, please call or text Laura McBride (989.772.5512) to arrange a time/day for her to collect it. Please arrange for assistance in lifting heavy/large items into the trailer. Friday, May 12 is the last day unless special arrangements are made with Laura. Thank you!

Congratulations to Drew!

Congratulations to Drew who has just received notice that he has been granted Full Fellowship by the Ministerial Fellowship Committee of the UUA. His accomplishment will be acknowledged at the Service of the Living Tradition at the General Assembly in Pittsburgh on June 22. There will be a livestream link available in June.

Celebrating Jakobe Neal

Our Director of Religious Education, Jakobe Neal, will be leaving us at the end of May. We will honor him at the annual meeting on May 21. Thank you, Jakobe, for all the dedication to our children and youth, and for the connections you have made during your time at UUFCM!

Kirsten Keeton Retiring After 13 Years

Kirsten Keeton has decided to move on after serving as our Administrative Assistant for 13 years. Kirsten’s behind-the-scenes work has held together the organizational side of UUFCM through changes in Board leadership, Ministerial leadership, and more. Her last day will be June 30. Thank you, Kirsten, for everything you have done for us!

UUFCM is Hiring!

With the two staff transitions announced above, UUFCM is looking to hire a new Director of Religious Education and a new Administrative Assistant. If you know anyone interested and qualified, please encourage them to apply, as the best employees sometimes are recruited by word of mouth. UUFCM policy states that we usually do not hire members of the congregation to be employees. Applications and inquiries should go to Rev. Drew. The two job postings are here and on our website:
  • Job posting for Director of Religious Education
(6-10 hours per week starting August 15)
  • Job posting for Administrative Assistant
(7 hours per week starting July 1).

Save for This Year’s Garage Sale

Every two years in the spring, we hold an all-Fellowship garage sale with profits dedicated to a variety of projects, the last sale paying for our new front doors. As you are doing any spring housecleaning and come across items you could donate, please hold on to them for the mid-June sale. If you have questions, please contact Norma Bailey (989.560.3952; [email protected]).

Article II Amendment
Discussion Workshops

At General Assembly 2023, Unitarian Universalists will take an initial vote on proposed changes to Article II of the UUA Bylaws, which includes the current UUA purposes, principles, sources, and clauses on inclusion and freedom of belief.
The UUA Board is hosting the following Zoom workshops to discuss possible amendments to the Article II Study Commission proposal (PDF), open to all Unitarian Universalists. Whether or not you submitted a suggestion or idea, we encourage you to join us for one or more of these workshops.

Save the Date!

Rev. Eric Severson of the UU Fellowship of Midland has achieved the professional milestone of Minister in Full Fellowship. We are invited to celebrate with UUFoM on May 20. R.S.V.P. here.

Drawing Workshop - May 23

On 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, from 10-12 noon, Nancy Roeder will conduct a drawing workshop for all interested members. Bring in any artwork that you are doing with a drawing medium and she will offer help and answer questions about the piece you are working on. It can be almost any drawing medium, but please do not bring any type of paint. She will bring some books and photographs to use to pick projects and/or subjects. Nancy has a degree in fine arts from Washington University in St Louis. Please feel free to contact her with questions. Sponsored by the Adult RE Committee.

Movie Night - May 27

Jazz music is at its height and kids all over are enjoying it. The lively dance moves reflects the energy of the music. Under Nazi rule, the music is banned. But kids will be kids and will find ways around this regardless of the severe penalty. Join us on Saturday, May 27 at 7pm to watch Swing Kids, a movie based on actual events.

COVID Policy and Information

  • We continue with hybrid services (in-person/Zoom). Our current policy is that everyone entering the building must be vaccinated (unless exempt), which applies to children also. Masks are optional for worship services and small group meetings.

  • Singing by the congregation and the choir is allowed with masks optional.

  • Small groups can meet in person if they wish, meet on Zoom – or do a mixture. This includes all of our teams and the Board itself. We will do our best to publish how meetings are going to be held, and please check with the leader of each meeting if you’re not sure.

  • Indoor eating events are allowed – coffee hour, Friday night potlucks, and our annual Harvest Feast, etc.

Please be aware that the situation is fluid. We are monitoring the situation frequently, so stay tuned for update

The current list of UUFCM COVID policies may be found on our website.
