Members of the Social Justice Coordinating Committee (SJCC) are frequently asked, “What does SJCC do?" As the UUFCM Social Justice Coordinating Committee, we are committed to alerting congregational members and friends to events/needs, etc., in our local, regional, state, national and global world, so that individually and/or collectively we can, inspired by love, work to transform ourselves and our world. While we will regularly announce events and needs through the e-News, the bulletin board in the fellowship hall, the order of service and on our closed Facebook page, we also directly alert members and friends who might have an interest in a specific issue. To this end, we ask that you fill out the attached survey and submit a hard copy to any of the members of the committee or e-mail your completed survey to Norma Bailey at baile1nj@cmich.edu. The Issues Forum, which will provide you the opportunity to meet your elected officials and ask them questions about women’s issues that are important to you, will be from 5:30-7:30 pm. The Isabella County Restoration House (ICRH), which provides the rotating homeless shelter in the winter months, is presenting a Community-wide Forum Focused on Homelessness in Isabella County on Tuesday, August 30, at 7:00 pm at the Isabella County Commission on Aging, Rooms A & B. It will be held in Brighton, MI on Saturday, September 17, form 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. We are hoping that a good number of us from UUFCM will attend as we are focusing on gaining a better understanding of transgender issues as a continuation of our Welcoming Congregation efforts this year. Contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952 or at baile1nj@cmich.edu to arrange carpooling. Save the Date flyer attached. The Community Action Dialogues for Black Lives Matter will have its first meeting this year on Tuesday, September 27, at 7:00 pm in the Bovee UC Terrace Rooms. June 2016 is the one-year anniversary of marriage equality! While we celebrate this month as LGBT Pride Month (you can read President Obama’s eloquent proclamation here), we are all aware of the work still needed towards true equality. In Michigan, not one but two “bathroom inspection” bills aimed at transgender persons have been introduced in our legislature. Visit the Equality Michigan website to sign the petition to stop the Runestad & Casperson Bathroom Inspection Bills SB 993 and HB 5717.
