Women’s Aid Service  Fundraiser - October 20

10/11/2017

Women’s Aid Service is holding its annual fundraiser, The Chocolate Fantasy, at 5:00 on Friday, October 20. For those not familiar with the agency, WAS provides shelter, counseling, and legal aid for victims, and their children, of domestic violence and sexual assault.

If you are interested in attending, or are willing to purchase a ticket ($40) to be used by someone else—for example, a student—please contact Joyce Henricks (joyce.henricks@cmich.edu; or 989-400- 9743) - or see her on Sunday!

Social Justice Coordinating Committee (SJCC)

8/24/2016

Members of the Social Justice Coordinating Committee (SJCC) are frequently asked, “What does SJCC do?"
As the UUFCM Social Justice Coordinating Committee, we are committed to alerting congregational members and friends to events/needs, etc., in our local, regional, state, national and global world, so that individually and/or collectively we can, inspired by love, work to transform ourselves and our world.

While we will regularly announce events and needs through the e-News, the bulletin board in the fellowship hall, the order of service and on our closed Facebook page, we also directly alert members and friends who might have an interest in a specific issue. To this end, we ask that you fill out the attached survey and submit a hard copy to any of the members of the committee or e-mail your completed survey to Norma Bailey at baile1nj@cmich.edu.
Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan is hosting an Activist Conference and Issues Forum for Isabella County at Veterans Memorial Library on Tuesday, August 30. The Activist Conference, which will include presentations on a variety of issues affecting our state, including Reproductive Justice, Redistricting, and How the Budget Affects Michigan’s Families, will be from 1-5:30 pm. The Issues Forum, which will provide you the opportunity to meet your elected officials and ask them questions about women’s issues that are important to you, will be from 5:30-7:30 pm.
The Isabella County Restoration House (ICRH), which provides the rotating homeless shelter in the winter months, is presenting a Community-wide Forum Focused on Homelessness in Isabella County on Tuesday, August 30, at 7:00 pm at the Isabella County Commission on Aging, Rooms A & B. Since our fellowship is very much involved in the ICRH efforts, we encourage you all to attend to learn about where we’ve been, where we are now, and where our new vision will take us.Flyer attached.
MUUSJN, along with Inclusive Justice, the National LGBTQ Task Force, Equality Michigan and several other organizations, is hosting a conference and training to build a statewide faith network dedicated to justice and the full inclusion of LGBTQ people in our congregations and society-at-large. It will be held in Brighton, MI on Saturday, September 17, form 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. We are hoping that a good number of us from UUFCM will attend as we are focusing on gaining a better understanding of transgender issues as a continuation of our Welcoming Congregation efforts this year. Contact Norma Bailey at 989-560-3952 or at baile1nj@cmich.edu to arrange carpooling. Save the Date flyer attached.
The Community Action Dialogues for Black Lives Matter will have its first meeting this year on Tuesday, September 27, at 7:00 pm in the Bovee UC Terrace Rooms. We encourage you to attend the meeting and join one of the action teams working in our Mt. Pleasant Community. Flyer attached.

This workshop will be held on Monday, November 16 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Edgewood United Church of Christ in East Lansing located at 469 N. Hagadorn Road, East Lansing, MI 48823. Relief for Nepal

5/4/2015

From Mari Potter:
Hello, I need your help! I have been offered the opportunity to go to Nepal through Utopia Volunteers to help support victims of the earthquake at The Butterfly House Project and Early Childhood Development Center located in Katmandu, Nepal. I plan to be in Nepal for the month of July. The focus of my trip is simple: I will be working with Pushpa Basnet, CNN Hero of 2012, with 48 children she supports and the ECDC/Butterfly House. Children in Nepal go to prison with their mother's if there are no other guardians. Pushpa gets the children out of prison and raises them until their mother is released. Pushpa and her children are currently sleeping under an abandoned greenhouse and are still extremely exposed to the elements.

One way to help is to assist me in raising the funds to make this trip to Nepal in July. The Utopia Foundation will be funding part of my trip. I am working to come up with travel expenses. To donate toward my travel expenses:
• Go to http://utopiavolunteers.org/giving/support-the-general-fund/
• Choose the amount you will donate
• The next page is the Checkout Form. On the RIGHT side of the Checkout Form you will see
Additional Information. In the Notes box, please type: For Mari Potter Nepal Travel and relief fund.

Going through this site and specifying that your donation is intended for Mari Potter Travel and Relief, is tax deductible and all of the donation will go toward my travel expenses. Any additional funds will go directly to Pushpa and her work. Your contribution will allow me (and you) the privilege to help in Katmandu Nepal. I can also take cash or checks to help pay for my other expenses.

Thank you in advance for your support with this cause.
Mari Potter
