The new expression of Unitarian Universalist values is depicted as a series of ideas (Transformation, Equity, Interdependence, Pluralism, Generosity, Justice) around a central core value: Love. Why does Love belong at the center of our faith? How is love “liberating”? In this season when we celebrate Martin Luther King’s radical love and consider the mainstream Valentine’s Day celebration of love, it is good to explore how love fits into Unitarian Universalism.

The work of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. centered on love. He reminds us that love is not weak, passive, or sentimental: it is powerfully rooted in morality and in the divine. Unitarian Universalism likewise affirms that love is every person’s birthright, and that acting through love is the path to transforming human society. In this worship service we honor a great American hero, and a champion of love and justice.

January 7: Holding You in Love

As part of our weekly Sunday worship service, we invite people to share their joys and sorrows aloud if they wish–and the congregation responds with the words, “holding you in love.” Let’s amplify this sentiment and see where else it applies: holding ourselves in love means self-care and growing into our best selves; holding one another in love is the cornerstone of any family or any other group, and is a practice that supercedes judgment; holding the world in love allows us to act where we can and to accept what is beyond our control.
