October 1, 2023:  Clinging to the Streambed

9/24/2023

Rev. Drew Franz
The book “Illusions” by Richard Bach contains a parable about creatures who cling to a streambed throughout their existence–and one who dared to let go. This story offers metaphors for how we live our lives and the choices we make. What are you clinging to? What would be the consequences (positive and negative) if you were to let go?

September 24, 2023:  Howard Thurman

9/18/2023

Rev. Drew Franz
Mysticism is an important concept in Unitarian Universalism: we affirm that we can experience the divine directly, without a minister or sacred text. The work of Howard Thurman centers on mysticism. He was a minister, religious scholar, and a mystic himself. His perspective on other mystics in history–including Gandhi, Buddha, and William Blake–offers a rich insight into this topic.

September 17, 2023:  Honoring Rosh Hashanah

9/12/2023

Rev. Drew Franz
The Jewish holiday of Rosh Hashanah is the new year, and the beginning of the Days of Awe that culminates a week later with Yom Kippur. As Unitarian Universalists–Jewish or not–we seek to be informed about a broad spectrum of religious practices and to benefit from their wisdom. Thus we will reflect this Sunday about the practices of repentance and forgiveness that are at the heart of Rosh Hashanah–and crucial to every human being. For what transgressions do you need to seek forgiveness? All are welcome.

September 10, 2023: The Gift of Welcome

9/5/2023

Rev. Drew Franz
In our interactions with others, we both give and receive welcome. What does it feel like to receive a total and sincere welcome? How can we cultivate the offering of that welcome to others? The practice of welcome may be an action, but may be a mind-set as well. As we commit to a stance of welcoming to others, we become more welcoming of parts of ourselves; and of the experiences of our lives.

September 3, 2023:   Putting “Labor” Back in Labor Day

9/3/2023

Worship Leader: Norma Bailey
On this Labor Day, 2023, come hear the words of the Rev. Dr. David Breeden as he posits that the most effective anti-poverty program this nation has ever had is labor unions AND that our Unitarian Universalist faith needs to clearly get on the side of justice for the civil rights issue of our time, fighting to create a fair and equitable economy.
