Sometimes we know what is wise even though we don’t want to acknowledge it. Wisdom that comes from parents, doctors, colleagues, and friends sometimes falls in this category. What makes us resistant to wisdom, and how can we open ourselves to greater acceptance?

Human meaning is rooted in our ability to share–and thereby enliven–what is good. This has been true, for example, among our earliest human ancestors, in traditional Buddhist culture, and in American philanthropy. Seeing that, we can grow into gracefully giving in a free and abundant way. It is therefore wise to give, and giving is a path to still deeper wisdom.

March 15: Wisdom of the Generations

For this multigenerational service, we will hear a piece of wisdom from members of the congregation throughout the span of years, as well as popular wisdom from recent decades.

March 8: Women’s Suffrage and Susan B. Anthony

This year marks the 100th anniversary of the 19th amendment, granting women (in practice, only white women at the time) the right to vote. We celebrate activist and suffragist Susan B. Anthony as one of our Unitarian ancestors. Remember to vote on March 10!

March 1: Toltec Wisdom

The Toltec were a society of artists and scientists in ancient Mexico. Their Four Agreements offer a good structure to think about morality and truth. The first of the agreements is: “be impeccable with your word—use the power of your word in the direction of truth and love.”
