Unitarian Universalists are sometimes reluctant to evangelize–to spread the word about our religion and encourage others to join us. However, if we believe that we have a life-affirming, life-changing, life-saving faith tradition then we should certainly be sharing it. Let’s reflect about both why and how we should be generously sharing Unitarian Universalism with the world.

One of the greatest gifts that we can give to one another is to show up when someone needs us. This is true in family life, in friendship, and in communities of mutual care like a religious congregation. This type of compassionate presence involves setting our own agenda aside and refraining from giving advice—unless it is asked for. Cultivating this type of compassionate presence in our personal lives and in our congregation is a spiritual practice that we can all benefit from.

The importance of being generous with material goods is affirmed in Hinduism, Buddhism and Christianity; in the potlatch tradition of Native Americans of the northwest; and in the birthday traditions of hobbits. A wider view of generosity should include not just things and money, but resources such as expertise, knowledge, power, privilege and space. Why is it universally good to be generous? How does generosity benefit everyone?
