On Mother’s Day, we honor the capacity of people with wombs—although not all people with wombs—to bring new life into the world. This is a holiday that elevates motherhood while, paradoxically, diminishing it. When we define motherhood with a few sanitized, sentimental tropes, we disempower those who give birth and cut ourselves off from the awesome complexity of generation, the physical reality of mothering, and the basic human right of body autonomy. |
